High Dam, Granite Quarries with
Unfinished Obelisk
(4 hours) Includes: Entrance fees for above mentioned sights. Description: the High Dam, built across the Nile, consists of 17 times the masses of the Cheops pyramid; the dam has created a 500 kms artificial lake on its south side. We will learn more about its importance for the development of modern Egypt and, of course, about Nubia, lost under its waters. We will also visit one of the Granite Quarries where the workers cut out the stones needed for decorations and buildings during the Pharaonic times; from the beginning, they did not even have metal to cut with. Also, here lies the Unfinished Obelisk, the biggest one if it had ever been finished. Can be combined with any half-day Aswan excursion. |
